AnaliseMinjarez
My name is Analise Minjarez (1990, El Paso, TX), and I am an interdisciplinary artist and art educator whose work hinges on material transformation and the healing realization that the human–nature relationship is not singular. With sensitivity to light, material, and site, I pay attention to nature to understand my connection to place. As a Texas/Mexico fronteriza, a borderland perspective remains central to my conceptual thinking.

I engage with material meaning through ceramics, drawing, textiles, video, and installation, each medium tracing my connection nature. My response to materials and their meanings at times can be overwhelming. Occasionally in tune with shifts in seasons, light, and moisture, I continue to adapt and respond to the sensations that emerge through material connection. I play with tension or look for release with material pairing in each piece. My studio practice exists both as a physical place, but also as sensations in response to material and place.

I received my M.F. A.(2022) from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX and a B.F.A. (2013) in Fibers from the University of North Texas in Denton. I’ve taught classes at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Latino Cultural Center, and SAY Sí. I have exhibited work at the Infinite School in Los Angeles, CA and at Sweet Pass Sculpture Park in Dallas, TX. Most recently, Minjarez was awarded the 2024 Nasher Artist Grant at the Nasher Sculpture Center.

Untitled (Portal)

Analise Minjarez, Untitled (Portal) ,
MODERN BILLINGS X, 2022, The Modern, 1410 Jacksboro Hwy, Ft. Worth, Texas, 76164.

I was invited by The Modern Ft. Worth to participate in MODERN BILLINGS X, a group exhibition from December 10, 2021 - January 30, 2022. Using space from Clear Channel Outdoor as programming sites, Assistant Curators of Education Jesse Morgan Barnett and Tiffany Wolf Smith work with artists to situate imagery and text onto billboards, elements of the city that traditionally present commercial advertisements rather than cultural curiosities. For MODERN BILLINGS, artists place works into under-served communities along the periphery of downtown Fort Worth.

For “Untitled (Portal)” I placed the ground in the sky. I thought about grounding myself during anxious times. In the image, I removed a piece of the cracked clay to reveal concrete below. On certain blue gray days of this winter season, the concrete will translate into a window or portal against the sky.
